He is one of the discoveries in the team and a professional whose achievements we all rejoice in. He has been building the path he is on today since he was a child and speaks with great respect and gratitude about the inherited family passion for construction, the lessons taught and the good example he set.
Today, in the role of project manager of "Sharena Fabrika", Dimitar Vassilev is one of the main pillars on which the basic processes in the implementation of each stage of construction are supported. He works with dedication and the understanding that he is building the present, which will change the future and it is important that it can withstand anything.
We ask him when he started building his own path, what it means to have worked on a project that was awarded the "Building of the Year" award, and with what emotions he took on his new position at Sharena Fabrika.
When and how did you start building your own path?
From an early age, I began to develop an interest in construction. As a child, I loved playing with Lego. I spent countless hours doing this activity. My interest in construction is probably in my genes. Both my grandfather, whose name I proudly bear, and my father are builders. I dare to say that I am a third-generation builder with a true passion for the profession. For me, construction is not just a profession, it is an art that leaves a lasting material mark over time. My grandfather often said that the magic of construction is in the trace you leave. You start with an empty lot and build something that will stand the test of time. This philosophy guides me in every step I take.
What are the foundations they laid in you as a professional?
I was around my grandfather and father from a young age, watching and learning from them. Their dedication and professionalism formed the foundation of my understanding of construction. I started at the lowest rung in the hierarchy, just as they did. This gave me a deep understanding of the work involved in creating something with your own hands and the satisfaction that comes with it.
What is the significance of this heredity to you?
Significance is also manifested in the ability to inspire and motivate. The knowledge that I am part of an unbroken line of builders fills me with pride and responsibility. This is not just a job. This is a legacy that must be preserved and developed. Every successful project is a testament to the efforts and talent of previous generations who have passed on their knowledge and skills to me.
How has your experience shaped you over the years?
I graduated from the "Kolyo Ficheto" Construction High School in Burgas, which gave me not only a solid foundation of knowledge, but also shaped my character and passion for construction. I continued my studies at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Sofia, where in my first year I started working, performing masonry, plastering and puttying. Then I started as an assistant technical manager in a large construction company that was implementing the third metro diameter in the capital. There I met my first mentors in the construction sector, from whom I learned a lot. Working on this large-scale project was a huge school in which one could encounter almost all types of construction activities. There I gained invaluable knowledge and experience that will serve me for the rest of my life.
What happened after this experience and how did your career develop?
I spent two years at the company and returned to my hometown of Burgas, where I started working in our family company – “TEAM 5“. Initially, I took on the role of technical manager of smaller sites, but over time I rose to project manager. I spent almost three years in Razgrad, participating in a large-scale plant expansion project. Together with our team, we built over 400 meters of overpasses for power lines and pipelines. After the completion of the project in Razgrad, I returned to Burgas and participated in the construction of a research and production complex in the city. I also completed a bachelor's degree in finance, which gave me another important perspective – the ability to manage the financial aspects of projects and balance quality and costs.
What does the “Building of the Year” award you received for the planetarium in Burgas mean to you?
The planetarium is one of the most remarkable projects I have ever worked on. Its realization was the result of a huge collaborative effort, filled with excitement and challenges at every step. This building is unique in its kind. With an outer diameter of 12 meters, the planetarium is a sphere with a surrounding ring.

The shell, made of stainless steel sheet with a mirror surface, covers an area of 400 square meters and is mounted on a sturdy stainless steel support structure. The enclosing ring passes into a canopy over the main entrance, built of stainless steel structure and lined with aluminum panels with an aluminum honeycomb core, creating a sense of futuristic design. Every participant in the construction chain contributed to the successful implementation of this exceptional project. I feel deep gratitude to our partners for their cooperation and support, but above all to our incredible team of employees, with whom we dedicated our work and time to the realization of this architectural miracle. The award we received is not just recognition of the work done, it is a symbol of our collective success and dedication.

What was the biggest challenge in this project?
Inside the building is an auditorium with a capacity of 50 seats, equipped with a modern projection dome and an audio-visual system. The suspended ceiling integrates the air conditioning and lighting, providing acoustic comfort and a cozy atmosphere. We managed to realize the concept of an authoritative architect for the landing of a flying saucer, giving the building a unique and memorable appearance. Similar structures around the world are more like sculptures, while the planetarium in Burgas is a building with real public functions. This significantly increased the complexity of the construction and implementation.
With what emotion did you approach the offer to take on such a large-scale project as
“Colorful Factory” in the role of project manager?
It was with great excitement and enthusiasm that I accepted the opportunity to be the project manager of this significant project. The opportunity to be part of the project filled me with a sense of pride and responsibility. Despite the challenges that I knew would arise, I felt and still feel a strong motivation and determination to put in the necessary efforts to achieve the ultimate goal. By dedicating myself to the successful implementation of this project, I know that I am investing a part of myself in something bigger and more important that will stand the test of time.

What skills are required for a person in a similar position and what are the responsibilities that the job entails?
A range of key skills and responsibilities are required to fill this position. A deep understanding of construction processes and execution technology is required – each step must be precisely planned and executed. Effective time management and prioritization of tasks are vital, as well as a high level of organization and attention to detail. Budget and cost management are equally important, as any mistake can lead to significant financial losses. Unexpected problems always lurk and finding solutions quickly is critical to the success of the project.
The management of resources – materials, equipment and human labor – requires constant attention. Quality control, as well as ensuring that all activities are carried out according to established standards, is an essential aspect. We strive for perfection in every respect.
What are the main stages of the construction process and how do you work on time with so much unpredictable weather and unforeseen situations?
I perceive the construction process as a complex equation with many variables. Solving this equation requires a global view of the whole. Constant control, coordination and flexibility are needed in managing these variable parameters. Only in this way can you direct them towards the ultimate goal – the successful implementation of the project. We start with planning and design, move through site preparation, rough construction, finishing works, equipment installation, trial tests, furnishing and commissioning. Each stage requires precise planning, coordination and control in order to achieve a successful completion of the project.
Working on time under unpredictable conditions is a challenge that requires flexibility and proactivity. We always plan with a buffer in time and resources to respond adequately to unexpected problems. Constant monitoring and quick decision-making are key. Teamwork and good communication allow us to adapt our plans and minimize delays.
How important is teamwork in such large-scale endeavors?
I think this is the moment to express my deep gratitude to the entire team of professionals I work with. The truth is that a leader is only as strong as the weakest link in his team. But I don't see weak links around me – I only see professionals, dedicated and talented people who give their best every day.
Each member of the team plays a key role in achieving our goals. In difficult times, they show incredible dedication and professionalism. I admire their ability to work under pressure, find creative solutions and adapt to changing circumstances. Such strength and determination are the foundation of any successful project.
Collaboration and mutual respect between team members are what allows us to overcome any challenge and achieve excellent results. I believe that together we can achieve a lot. This is the true spirit of successful construction – a collective effort aimed at a common goal and the confidence that there are no unattainable peaks when we work together.
What are the specifics and challenges of this project?
One of the main challenges is the reconstruction and strengthening of the old village school, built in 1932. Reconstructing such a building is more complicated than building a new one, as you have to take into account many factors and conditions. In addition, we strive to preserve the spirit and authenticity of the school. This is not just about construction skills, but about sensitivity and respect for the past. Reconstructing such a historical building is like working with a priceless artifact - every brick and every detail carries with it a history and significance. I sincerely thank the design team, represented by "VA Studio", for their professionalism and detailed approach, which significantly eases the work and minimizes unforeseen situations. I would compare their work to that of a responsible and precise surgeon. This is how they work.
How does it feel to know that you are participating in laying the foundations of a school that must stand the test of time?
Education is one of the main pillars of any society. The initiative to revive an old school, as well as to build a new one, is a holy cause. Educational institutions should be perceived as temples of knowledge. This complex will provide knowledge and skills to people who want to create and create.
Personally, I learn and assimilate best through practice and I am extremely happy that a huge base for practical classes and experience will be created here. I believe that theory and practice must meet in class for education to be complete.
Another significant aspect of this project is that it enhances a beautiful region. Visitors to the campus will be surrounded by the beautiful Bulgarian nature. Here they will find not only knowledge, but also a connection with nature, which is extremely valuable in today's fast-paced world.
I hope that what we have built will contribute to the revival of some prestigious professions. This is the way to contribute to the preservation and development of valuable skills and traditions that are the basis for the sustainable development of our society.
